The Pastor’s Pen

What does service mean to you? That was the topic of last Sunday’s sermon, and, certainly, service is one of those “must haves” when it comes to being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Disciples serve.  I’m excited to report there are two brand new amazing ministries for you to serve in our community.

The Union County United Methodist Latino Ministry began in June with a summer reading program at the Union County Library.  It has evolved into an afterschool tutoring program for K-8th grade and discipleship classes for parents.  The afterschool tutoring quickly outgrew the library and is now being housed at Calvary United Methodist Church on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:30.   The Latino Ministry is in desperate need of tutors to read and love precious children.  Which day are you willing to serve?  Contact Marta Bolen, Director of Latino Ministries for the New Albany District of the UMC, at 787-364-0351 or Cheryl Prather at 662-822-3653 for more information.

Robert and Nanette Ballard have responded to God’s call and opened Highland House Ministries:  Restoration through Creation.   Highland House Ministries serves as a place of restoration for all who need it, and there are many opportunities to lend a hand and serve.  Contact Nanette at 662-316-3420 to hear more about Highland House Ministries and to find your place in this ministry.

But remember….YOU can serve right where you are anytime of any day. You can pick up left-over bulletins in the sanctuary. You can buy a police officer a cup of coffee. You can help someone carry in their packages to the post office. Never count out the small things. For it’s the small things that often make an unknown deep impact and open the door for bigger things.

I invite you to spend intentional time in prayer, asking God to reveal to you how He is calling you to serve.  God has given you special gifts, an undeniable passion, and a story that He wants you to use to reach the world for Christ.  Pray, seek His will, and allow yourself to be a vessel for Him to use, then hold on for the ride – it will be truly AMAZING!
