Happy New Year! My prayer is that this New Year is filled with blessing and goodness for you and your family!
I’m sure that many of you saw the news reports last Friday that proclaimed the United Methodist Church had decided to split over issues of human sexuality. Many news outlets reported on this and articles were shared widely on social media. However, what actually happened is far short of an immediate split.
What actually happened is that 16 key leaders in our denomination, including several bishops, released a negotiated plan of separation that would form a new traditionalist denomination while at the same time giving the UMC the opportunity to liberalize its teachings on human sexuality. As of now, this is simply a proposal that will be presented for consideration at the May 2020 General Conference in Minneapolis, MN. There are other plans of separation that will also be considered by our top legislative body.
Know that only General Conference can speak for the United Methodist Church. Until something passes General Conference, it is merely a proposal. Also know that my deepest prayer is that our denominational happenings do not distract us from the good ministry our congregation is doing. Regardless of what General Conference does or does not do, we can be the church God has called us to be.
Speaking of being the church, you will find enclosed a listing of our 2020 Leadership. Take a moment to look over this list, and know that these are the leaders to call on if you ever have a need or a suggestion in a particular area. We are blessed at FUMC New Albany with strong, faithful lay leadership, and it is my honor to be the pastor of this fine church.
If you have any questions about what’s going on at the denominational level of our church, please don’t hesitate to ask. Remember, God is still in full control and continues to reign!
