The Pastor’s Pen

Word travels fast to those Methodist Mountains up at Lake Junaluska, NC. I’ve heard what an outstanding job Rev. Warren Black did preaching the second week of our Fall Discipleship Series.

Isn’t gratitude the key to unlocking so much of what’s good in life? An attitude of gratitude can really make a difference in our daily living.

Serving on the Southeastern Jurisdiction’s Committee on Finance and Administration (SEJ CFA in Methodist-speak), I’ve been sitting in meetings for the past few days. Although much of the work seems routine and ordinary as house dust, we have received agency reports detailing the wonderful work that’s happening among the people called Methodist throughout the SEJ.

And yet, up in these mountains, my mind often wandered home to YOU. Would you allow me to say what I’ve said many times before? THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Not every ministry and church in the SEJ is as financially healthy as our congregation. I want to thank you for your financial faithfulness and let you know how deeply I appreciate your generosity. While many ministry leaders are worried sick over finances, I don’t have to do so at New Albany First. That’s simply one aspect of church life in which I can rest easy at night. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Of course, we are gearing up to receive financial commitments for 2018. Commitment Sunday will be October 29, and I know that you will want to be part of the great things happening in our community of faith. In the next week or so you will receive more information in the mail, including the 2018 Commitment Card. If for some reason you don’t receive the stewardship packet, please call the church office.

There are many reasons to give to the church: to raise a budget, guilt, obligation, fear, etc.

However, there is only one “best” reason for us to join together on October 29: We love God more than anything else.

I know that we do. And I know that we will want our financial faithfulness to enable God’s work both in our church and community in 2018. See you October 29! And every Sunday before!
