The Pastor’s Pen

Advent blessings to you! This is indeed a wonderful time of year to turn our hearts back to God with increased prayer and worship. My deepest prayer for our community of faith is that these holidays truly become holy days.

Here’s a quick checklist of things to remember during this Advent season:

-Children’s Musical on December 10
-Christmas Cantata on December 17—ONE Service @ 10:30 a.m.
-Christmas Eve Morning—ONE Service @ 10:30 a.m. in the CLC
-Christmas Eve Candlelight—4 and 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Also, remember our special Christmas Offering! A generous donor has agreed to match the first $5,000.00 of the offering that is to be used for our new Education Building. Simply use one of the Christmas envelopes or write “special Christmas offering” on your check. What a great way to double our money while remembering  our Church this Christmas!

Since we are so close to the New Year, I’d like to share with you two great opportunities for spiritual growth. As you may have heard, I’m challenging each member of our church to write a thank you note for every day of 2018. This idea comes from a book by John Kralik titled “365 Thank Yous: The Year a Simple Act of Daily Gratitude Changed My Life.” If you would like to read the book, you can find it on-line or in bookstores. However, I’ll be preaching a three-week sermon series on this topic beginning January 14, so you will be up to speed even without reading the book.

Another opportunity is the Wednesday night study I teach from 6:15-7:00 p.m. in the chapel. Once we return from Christmas break, we will be using F. Belton Joyner’s “Being United Methodist in the Bible Belt.” Ever wondered what Methodists believe? Want to brush up on Methodist doctrine and theology? This is a wonderful opportunity to do so! Again, reading the book is not a requirement for attending. You will gain much from the teaching and discussion. However, if you would like to read the book you can find it easily on-line.

I wish you deep hope, love, joy and peace during this
Advent season. May the Holy Spirit move in your life in powerful ways!
