Laissez les bons temps rouler! Let the good times roll!
That’s right! On Fat Tuesday, February 28, we will be having a church-wide party. All are invited to a wonderful meal (please make reservations), games for children, music, and much, much more! It will be a great time for everyone. The fun will begin at 5 p.m.!
But remember the next day is even more important. Our March 1 Ash Wednesday Service will begin at 6 p.m. (There will be no meal). All are welcome, and our children will receive ashes toward the beginning of the service and then depart for their program.
What is Ash Wednesday? It’s the beginning of the season of Lent, that 40-day journey to Easter when we are blessed by a special time of reflection, repentance, and spiritual renewal. Oftentimes people give up something for Lent as a sign of devotion—chocolate, soda, etc. But what if you took something on this year? More prayer? Additional devotional reading? Some service/mission work?
Maybe these will truly be holy days for you! Certainly, if you pray daily, worship weekly, and make a special offering, they will be. Historically, Christians have used Lent as a time to give alms to the poor. This Lenten season we will be supporting the “Imagine No Malaria” Campaign in conjunction with churches all over the Mississippi Conference.
The United Methodist Church has been on the forefront of battling malaria. Every $10 we give will provide a bed net to prevent people from being bitten by mosquitoes and infected with this terrible virus. Devotional materials as well as small collection boxes will be available beginning Ash Wednesday.
Please pray. Please worship. Please give your alms. For these are the first steps in our returning to the Lord!
