The Pastor’s Pen

What a day of worship! This past Sunday was Youth Sunday, and I couldn’t be more delighted with our young people and how they led us in worship!

The senior testimonies were heartfelt and moving, the liturgists and musicians were excellent, and I thought the children’s sermon was the best one I’ve heard in a long, long time! Yet for me the most meaningful aspect of last Sunday’s worship was watching our seniors serve communion to the congregation. A few of them told me that this was the first time they had ever served communion. What a wonderful day to do so!

Thank you for attending our Youth Sunday service. All services were well attended, and I know that made our young people feel special and loved.

But as good as last Sunday indeed was, the day of all days is right around the corner. Yes, Easter Day—April 1—will be here before you know it! In order to make Easter meaningful, please consider the following…

*Come to church the next three Sundays—March 11 and 18 will feature key scriptures from the Gospel of John. These are words from Jesus that are foundational to the Christian life. Come and let them bless you. Also, our bishop, James E. Swanson, will be preaching at all three worship services on Palm Sunday, March 25. It is sure to be a special day in the great history of our church!

*Don’t skip Holy Week—We make a great mistake when we go from the cheers and parade of Palm Sunday directly to the glory of Easter morning. We will have Wednesday night activities as normal during Holy Week, but Thursday and Friday offer additional opportunities to grow closer to God. On Holy Thursday (or Maundy Thursday) at 7 p.m. we will gather together to share communion and remember the passion of our Lord. It will be a deeply contemplative and powerful time of worship. On Good Friday we will gather at Noon in the sanctuary for a short service followed by a light lunch. Our Holy Week services are sure to make the glory of Easter all the more real.

*Invite—Have a friend, family member, or neighbor who has no church home? Invite them to come with you to our Holy Week services as well as Easter Sunday. Offer to pick them up. Offer to sit with them. Do whatever it takes to introduce them to Christ. I’m already making a list of people to invite for these special times of worship!

Spring is nearly here. New life will be blooming all around us. Let us give thanks to God for the new life we have in Christ!
