During worship this past Sunday we talked about what it means to be a witness for Christ. Of course, we are to show up for him, but we are also to show forth for him as well. People need to see Jesus in us, for we have a world that so badly needs to hear some good news.
We can be a witness for Christ with words. This may mean telling a struggling friend about our own relationship with Christ, or it may involve an invitation to worship or Wednesday night dinner. Do our relationships with Christ matter? Does our involvement in a community of faith make any difference in our lives? The answer is a confident and resounding “yes!” and that means our words matter.
Who in your life has no relationship with Christ? Who do you know that might benefit from a welcoming and loving community of faith like FUMC New Albany? Words matter. May God give you the confidence and words you need to bring a friend with you the next time you come to church!
The other aspect of our personal witness has little to do with words and more about how we live. During the month of October, we are going to have several opportunities to be a good witness to our community. One unique event is our Blessing of the Animals to take place on Sunday, October 14 at 3 p.m. in the church garden. This service is often held this time of year to commemorate St. Francis and his love for animals. What do you need to do? Show up that afternoon with your pet (in appropriate restraints!), and each animal will be blessed at the close of a short service.
What other witness opportunities are coming up? Well, there’s our Children’s Sabbath and Commitment Sunday on October 21 and Lay Sunday on October 28. What wonderful days to bring friends and family to experience our community of faith!
But back to words…
May God give us the words and courage we need to share the blessings of faith and church with others! I’ll see you Sunday, if not before!
